When Todd and Viola raced down that mountain path, him begging her not to die, the only thing on his mind was to save her life. Her. Only her. Viola. But when the town they hoped would be their salvation turns into their worst nightmare they have no idea what’s in store for them. And yet the only thing on his mind, in his Noise, is still her. Mayor Prentiss beat them to it but now they’re about to realize that a race across the desert was nothing compared to what he has in store for them.
A purge is under way to rid the planet of any impurities so that a perfect world led by the now President Prentiss can greet the settlers when they arrive. But not everyone is willing to stand by and watch the tyrant torture the women, brainwash the men and enslave the Spackle. The time has come for the Answer to rise again and the Ask will not be far behind. Todd Hewitt will learn the true meaning of being a man. His friendship with the one he once hated the most will be a gift he never expected but the price to pay for the war to come may be more than he can offer. He will learn the true meaning of power and how the strongest one of all comes from within. He was the boy that could not kill. Will he be a man willing to take a life? Yes, to save her. He would do anything for her. And when all hell breaks loose, Todd and Viola will learn that despite all the betrayal, violence and pain they have endured, they will always have each other…
For those of you who have read the book you’ll know as well as I do that there is only so much you can say in a review about this second installment in the Chaos Walking trilogy, that won’t spoil the elements in the plot. And boy, oh boy this book would be nothing without its element of surprise.
For any of you willing to shamefully admit that you have not read the first book ‘The Knife of Never Letting go’ (which I also wrote a review for by the way: http://vanillavadz.wordpress.com/2014/02/13/the-knife-of-never-letting-go-by-patrick-ness/ ) then I suggest you go and buy it now because you have no idea what you are missing.
Patrick Ness left us on a major cliffhanger in the last book and now when our beloved characters return…I have to say that I had no idea at all what to expect. But I could not even have begun to guess that any of the things would happen as they did. The title itself once again leaves us all a little bit confused at first and it wasn’t until I reached a certain point in the book that I was all like OOOOOHHHHHHH!!! NOW I understand!
So Todd and Viola are back and still with the same intriguing, passionate, dedicated personalities that I loved from the first book. Some other characters also return to spice the plot up a bit but let’s not forget the new people who capture our hearts! In the first book the adventure was focused more on Viola and Todd and their trials across the planet along with the involvement of a few other choice players, but this time there are so many more people to get to love and cry for when we lose. And without saying too much I’ll just mention that there is quite a bit of that!
What I love about this series is that the author manages to invoke all kinds of feelings in the reader at different times but there isn’t a time when the book is monotonous or doesn’t cause something to rise or fall in the stomach! Trust me! You either feel epically confused in a fantastic way, experience one of those ‘grab-your-chest’ gasps, have chills run down your spine, have your butt almost fall of the chair or have yourself not even able to see the pages anymore because they’re blurry all of a sudden. I’m not even kidding! And it’s not like we get a light feel of the different emotions! No no no we get full on waterworks, and we can’t help but feel the characters betrayal sting, feel their pain, feel their emptiness at times and most importantly feel the love our two protagonists have for one another.
This book is about devotion, friendship and sacrifice. The unique writing style just makes it that more of an experience and this is one book you should definitely give some time to reading!
A definite 5 out of 5! <3
